MAXIMISE YOUR BODY'S PERFORMANCE FOR BETTER GOLF!

Physical capability of a golfer including strength and flexibility is one of the key factors in golf performance. The world of golf is beginning to realise the importance of getting fit to play golf rather than playing golf to get fit.

Elite players strive to have a physical edge over their opponents; golfers who are stronger and more flexible generate greater swing power. golffitness has developed a unique service for golfers of all levels using information derived from current Australian and International research along with guidance from renowned elite golf physiotherapists.

Although we are not all going to be like Tiger Woods, a golffitness programme will help to achieve your full golf potential. We offer a musculoskeletal package that identifies physical limitations; we then create a golf specific and personalised exercise programme to improve strength and flexibility.

golffitness invites you to tune your body for better golf!

2: Julie Pfitzner wins tournament after completing the musculoskeletal package!

Congratulations to Julie who won the following tournaments after coming to golffitness for some help with her back pain and advice on flexibility for her golf swing:

  • Winner: Nett – Bronze Division
  • Winner: 50 –59 – Bronze Division
  • R/U: Foursomes – Bronze Division
  • R/U (ocb): Gross – Bronze Division

This is what she had to say:

  Julie Pfitzner

Kelly, I am delighted to be able to advise you that the stretching program you specifically devised for me has paid dividends. At the recent Queensland Championships I had some success in both the Foursomes and Singles events.

As a full time worker and weekend golfer it was important to get my body as fit as time permitted, and your program took into account my lifestyle and part time commitment to this sport. While I found the four days of golf exhausting I believe that I would not have been able to achieve these results without your help. Thank you,

Julie Pfitzner.

3: Look after your back: take care when handling your buggy!

Why use a golf buggy?

Buggies are designed to assist the golfer in transporting their golf clubs and bag. If used correctly they can help prevent shoulder and neck problems from prolonged carrying of the bag. Golf buggies minimise fatigue on the golf course allowing you to put all your energy into the game.

However if the golf buggy is handled and lifted incorrectly they can lead to injuries, especially to the lower back.

Here are a few Handling Pointers:

  • Remember to bend your knees and keep your back straight when taking the buggy and golf bag from the car.

  • Bring your bag and buggy close to you before lifting from the car, use your leg muscles and brace through your deep abdominals and pelvic muscles.

  • Never twist quickly when removing the golf equipment; remember to use your legs and move your feet.

  • Get down to buggy level to assemble, don't bend your back.

  • Always bend at the knees not the back; use a mat to kneel on if required.

  • Remember to adjust the handle of your buggy to waist level. You should have a comfortable range of movement through your shoulder and elbow.

  • Generally pushing the buggy in front gives better manoeuvrability and is less strain on your spine.

  • Pushing can also minimise strain on your neck and shoulders, let your legs do the work!

  • When going up hills use your buttocks and thighs, keep your back straight.

  • Sometimes you will need to pull your buggy over uneven ground or going up a kerb. Try to alternate between your left and right arm to reduce the strain placed on your back and shoulder

  • The same rules apply when putting your clubs and buggy back into the car; keep your back straight, use your deep abdominals and bend from the knees, with the weight close to the body.

Maintain your golf buggy!

Just as we promote tuning your body for better golf, maintaining your golf buggy can also decrease injuries:

  • Repeated jarring and shock through the shoulder may eventually result in a tendonitis or shoulder strain

  • A third wheel gives better stability, and a smoother ride over the different surfaces of the golf course

  • Small tyres may lead to jarring when pushing/pulling over uneven surfaces

  • You will experience improved manoeuvrability with wider tyres

  • Regular oiling of buggy wheels can prevent friction thus reducing the strain through the upper body

If you have a mobility problem, use a motorised golf buggy especially if the course is long or hilly, the same rules apply when placing the clubs on the buggy. Always bend your knees, keep the back straight and brace the deep abdominals!
