Biomechanical assessment and exercise programme

This is for the golfer who wants to find out how efficiently their body is performing, and how it can be improved so they can play better golf.

Initially you will undergo a thorough assessment of your muscles and joints. The physiotherapist will be assessing how they are performing in relation to your golf swing.

Any musculoskeletal shortcoming can be identified in this process and with this information your physiotherapist will devise an exercise programme specific to your needs.

The programme is essentially home based and two follow up sessions are arranged as part of the package to help to keep you on track and to progress the exercises.

Should you prefer us to monitor your programme more closely, personal training sessions can be arranged. Some of our therapists hold extra qualifications in sport and exercise science and training in pilates and stability exercise. We can arrange sessions with the most appropriate therapist to suit your needs.

Occasionally clients who have completed the course feel they would benefit from a maintenance programme to keep their improved form, this is easily arranged. We find being flexible allows our patients to achieve their goals successfully.

Should you have a specific condition that affects your golf (e.g.shoulder pain), treatment can run concurrently with your programme.

Injury management

golffitness operates within South City Physiotherapy Centre, which has been operating since 1995. Our physiotherapists have extensive experience in treating musculo-skeletal injuries and extensive training in assessing and treating golf injuries.

Your injury or condition will be accurately assessed and diagnosed by the treating physiotherapist. Your condition will be explained and a treatment programme will be undertaken. Information and exercises will be made available where appropriate.

Your time and recovery are important to us. golffitness staff work to a timetable so as not to keep clients waiting. We only book one patient per physiotherapist as we believe you deserve the full attention of your treating physiotherapist.

Maintenance Programme

This is for the golfer who has completed the screening package and wishes to continue treatment. Once we have determined any physical or postural limitations that may be affecting your golf swing, we give you a personal programme of specific stretches and postural exercises. After the initial two follow-up appointments we offer a maintenance programme.

The main aim of this programme is to identify risk areas and postural weaknesses and to develop awareness of good postural position when addressing the ball. With an extended programme physical preparation for golf is optimised. Studies have shown a dramatic decrease in chronic golf injuries and faster return to golf participation as a result of similar programmes and physio intervention in Melbourne .

This programme involves return visits with your physiotherapist to modify and progress your exercise protocol. These usually would occur every 6-8 weeks. Reviewing the programme ensures correct technique, and progressively increasing the workload or advancing the exercises to promote continued development.

The content of the programme is specific, you may need core stability and would therefore benefit from a ball and pilates programme. Alternatively you may have flexibility issues due to prolonged time spent in poor postures during your work day and will benefit from stretching and postural exercises.

Or you may have difficulty in maintaining balance through your golf swing so a stability programme would be beneficial. Whatever the problem the golffitness physiotherapists will help design a programme that can be modified and progressed as you improve.

The maintenance programme is also especially beneficial to the 'older' golfer, you enjoy your golf and want to keep playing into your 90's. The golffitness physiotherapist will detail a programme to maintain your flexibility thus lowering the risk of injury and prolonging your golfing life.

A study carried out in Sweden shows that playing regular golf in your later years helps reduce blood pressure, reduce weight and fat levels, as well as maintaining aerobic fitness, leg and hand grip strength.

The maintenance programme:

  • is designed after musculoskeletal screening;
  • can be coupled with coach's report of technical concerns in the golf swing; and
  • is fully individualised and golf specific.

Golf specific exercise protocol:

  • has been shown to reduce golf related injuries;
  • maximises golf performance with improved swing;
  • prolongs your golfing life; and
  • decreases the effect of fatigue on performance.
